In whichever category you fall, miter saw stands are invaluable addition in accessories of any occasional or professional woodworker with frequent use of miter saws because they provide a stable base for the tool to work ergonomically.

In this post, we have researched the market to find the best miter saw stand for professional applications for contractors and carpenters including sawing of lumber and constructional wood and occasional applications including backyard workshop and DIY use.

Don’t forget to read the piece we’ve written on what to look for in a miter saw stand after the rankings. We are sure you are missing out some important considerations and we have laid them out for you.

Also don’t forget to check how we’ve dissected a miter saw accident at the end of this article to present 5 major safety rules to always follow when using miter saws.

Ranking the 8 Best Miter Saw Stands

The miter saw stands we have reviewed are compatible with majority of 10-12” and some 14” simple as well as compound miter saws, however, it is always better to double check the base dimensions of your miter saw to confirm its compatibility with the stand.

Without further due, let's begin the rankings.

1

BOSCH T4B Gravity-Rise Miter Saw Stand

Best Rolling Miter Saw Stand

Our Rating: 9.6 / 10

This Bosch miter saw stand has a solid and durable steel construction that supports material length of up to 18 ft. on its extendable arms - the highest in competition and rarely found in portable units.

It has a weight handling capacity of 300 lbs. that can easily handle 2x4s, 4x4s and other dimensional lumber used in construction of homes. A table height of 33.5” (without the saw) provides ergonomic working height to the operator.

With a weight of 76.7 lbs. and comparatively large overall dimensions, it is not the most compact stand out there, however, its gravity rise mechanism allows the easiest setup and folding without the need to remove your miter saw from over it whereas its 8” solid rubber tires allow great mobility over rough terrains.

To give an idea of its utility, it may be used for trimming baseboards as well as door and window trims with 8-15 foot long lumber (imagine 16 ft. 2x6 Ipe sawing jobs) or cut hundreds of sq. ft. of bead board ceilings. This stand is all a contractor needs for installing trims in hundreds of rooms in houses, hotels, churches and retirement homes or what a DIYer needs for a home remodeling project.

Based on its durable construction, ergonomic design, great stability and ease of setup, folding and rolling, we found Bosch Gravity Rise T4B to be the best miter saw stand in competition.

Pros

Extendable arms support material of up to 18 ft. length – the highest in competition.

Universal quick release brackets offer compatibility with majority brands & models of miter saws as well as very quick & tool free mounting and dismounting ability.

Adjustable end stops for repetitive cutting of wood without the need to measure again and again.

Adjustable material supports for preventing sagging of the job.

Non-Marring rubberized feet to prevent stand from both slipping over and scratching the floor.

Adjustable legs to level the stand on uneven floor/surface.

No need to dismount the miter saw before folding the stand.

Features built-in wheels to make the miter saw mobile for easily carrying from one job site to another.

Shortcomings

Not compact (76.7 lbs. weight and folded dimensions of 48”x28”x30”)

2

Dewalt DWX723

Best Professional Miter Saw Stand

Our Rating: 9.5 / 10

The Dewalt miter saw stand model DWX723 has 500 lbs. of weight handling capacity and supports up to 16 ft. of material length at a weight of only 29 lbs. and comparatively smaller folded dimensions giving it a higher strength to weight ratio than the Bosch miter saw stand at position 1 on our list and making it the best heavy duty miter saw stand for professional use.

Its durable construction offers good stability while cutting constructional lumber and does not wobble during use.

The only reason we didn’t place it at first position is because it does not have wheels for easy portability; adjustable feet for leveling it on uneven surfaces and the miter saw has to be dismounted before this stand can be folded - a limitation not found in the Bosch miter saw stand.

From being used on molding, framing and cabinetry trim in a house renovation and remodeling project to making large mitered boxes by a DIYer, this saw has performed up to the expectations.

It is built for everyday use on the jobsite by contractors moving from one project to another from week to week. From doing kitchens, interior trims and floor installations to high end molding work and coffered ceilings. Whether it is 15 ft. baseboard or 16 ft. pine primed crown molding, this stand will serve as a solid foundation for sawing.

However, as per our evaluation, it beats Bosch over fitness for heavy duty and professional use due to its sturdier construction. If wheels are not a big issue for you, Dewalt miter saw stand DWX723 is the best miter saw stand for heavy duty and professional applications at a better price point than Bosch.

Pros

Extendable arms support material of up to 16 ft. length – second only to Bosch miter saw stand TB4.

Universal quick release brackets offer compatibility with majority brands & models of miter saws as well as very quick & tool free mounting and dismounting ability.

Very compact design (weight of 29 lbs. and folded dimensions of 72" x 9" x 6")

Adjustable end stops for repetitive cutting of wood without the need to measure again and again.

Adjustable material supports for preventing sagging of the job.

Non-Marring rubberized feet to prevent stand from both slipping over and scratching the floor.

Features built-in wheels to make the miter saw mobile for easily carrying from one job site to another.

Shortcomings

Our Rating: 9.2 / 10

This Dewalt miter saw stand has a weight holding capacity of 300 lbs. and supports up to 8 ft. of material length on its extendable arms. Built from durable steel tubing, it is a sturdy stand providing very good stability for cutting lumber.

A specialty of this tool is its raising and lowering mechanism that looks similar to the Bosch gravity rise mechanism, however, Dewalt has included pneumatic assistance to make raising and lowering even more effortless. It is the easiest to setup miter saw stand in the competition.

Whether it is exterior trim, interior trim, lightweight trim or long trim work, this stand will be extremely useful for residential trim carpenters.

In addition to being extremely useful for trim work, it will also get a decent job done in flooring projects as well as cabinetry projects. It will make cutting fillers, crown molding and scribe a breeze.

We would’ve given this stand a higher rating if it had universal quick release brackets instead of a fixed railing for mounting miter saws over it and if Dewalt had reduced its weight of 67 lbs. that falls towards the higher side of competition. Nonetheless, it is a great choice for professional as well as DIY applications.

At a table height of 29.5” that is a bit low, its construction is sturdy, however, lacks a bit in stability of its extension arms that does not make it suitable for professional applications.

To give an idea of is utility, you may use it for cutting skirting boards, timber gravel boards, posts, decking boards and wooden planks as well as installation of baseboards and moldings. Valuable Accessory: Extension Support

DEWALT Miter Saw Stand Extension Support (DW7028)

One of the problems in using miter saw stands is experiencing bowing of long boards when loading them over the extended supports of miter saw stands. It affects the workability and precision of miter saw work.

In this regard, a cheap solution is using extension supports. These are adjustable supports that can easily be carried wherever the miter saw stand is being carried.

Once placed under the extended support, they won’t let the supports from sagging or bowing.

What should I look for in a miter saw stand?

You should look for the following important things when buying a miter saw stand:

Maximum Supported Length of the Material

Different miter saw stands have different lengths and weights of materials that can be loaded over them for cutting. It is important that you consider what would you be cutting with your miter saw mounted over the miter saw stand?

If your application involves cutting 16 ft. long timber gravel boards, base or casing moldings you may need something like the Bosch T4B or Dewalt DWX723 that support such large jobs.

However, if you are looking for around the house jobs involving 6-8 ft. baseboards and window trims, something like the Dewalt DWX725B would work just fine.

Universal Quick Release Brackets are a Must!

Most probably, you will not stick to buying miter saw stand of the same manufacturer as your miter saw itself. You may have a miter saw of Makita but you may be buying Dewalt’s stand. Therefore, the big question is if a different brand miter saw would fit over the stand? The answer is Universal Quick Release Brackets.

Quick Release Brackets are the industry’s solution to compatibility issues related to assembling the miter saw of one brand over miter saw stand of another brand. Therefore, always look for Universal Quick Release Brackets.

Will Your Miter Saw Stand travel with you? – Weight weighs!

Is your miter saw stand going to be traveling with you from one project jobsite to another week after week in the back of your truck? Or is it going to be staying in your workshop or home garage?

If the former is true, you have to consider the weight of the miter saw stand. While Bosch T4B is the best miter saw stand, it is not going to be easy loading and unloading that +75 lbs. thing. Under such an application, Dewalt DWX723 that weighs a manageable 29 lbs. would be the better option.

Do you need just Portable or a Rolling Miter Saw Stand?

Remember, all portable miter saw stands are not rolling miter saw stands.

Why?

Because not all of them have wheels.

If you are going to be moving your miter saw stand around on a jobsite having soft dirt, grass, cords, hoses, door thresholds, rocks and scraps of framing lumber, you would want a miter saw stands with a great set of wheels.

A portable miter saw stand is collapsible. However, if it doesn’t have wheels, you’ll have to lift it up and carry it to point B. With wheels, you just collapse the stand and get it rolling on the ground.

How tall are you?

Yes, you read that right. We just referred to your height.

Why that matters?

Because the last thing you’d want is slouching over your miter saw stand while working and hurting your back after you’ve done your work.

If you’re a tall person (6 ft. and above), you much always check the height of the miter saw stand you are buying and look for the greatest height you could get.

The best miter saw on our list is the Bosch T4B with a height of 33.5” which is a good height. However, Dewalt DWX725B and Bora PM4000 have an even better height of 36”. For a taller person, the latter two choices are better suited.

Repetitive Cuts? – Don’t Forget Adjustable End Stops

If your application involves cutting large pieces of material repetitively into a standard length pieces such as converting a set of 16 ft. crown moldings into 4 ft. pieces, you should look for adjustable end stops.

Miter saw stands that have adjustable end stops save you from the pain of making the measurement again and again. You just make the adjustment once and forget about the measurement. Let the stand do that for you.

Some Other Useful Side Features to look for

Apart from the considerations we laid down above, some other side features to consider include:

1. Non-marring rubberized feet to save your floor from getting marks of the miter saw stand.

2. Adjustable length of legs of the miter saw stand for allowing you to make it level over uneven surfaces.

3. Ease of setting up the stand. What are the motions you have to go through to set the stand up?

4. Overall folded dimensions of the stand to make sure you’d be able to store it under the stairs like you imagined. It wouldn’t be ideal to find out it doesn’t fit after you’ve purchased it.

Dissecting a Miter Saw Accident to Explain the 5 Major Safety Rules when working with Miter Saw

If you’ve made this far into this article, we are sure you are either already using a miter saw or intend to use it. Therefore, let us present you the 5 most important things in our view relate to miter saw safety.

Let’s not make this a boring piece of descriptive-only information that you are going to forget 10 minutes after reading. Let us start by giving you an idea of what could go wrong.

Watch the illustration below of a miter saw accident and then we’ll dissect the accident to give you the 5 major safety rules we referred.

(Video credit goes to YouTube Channel: Saulty Texas)

What you just watched above was an accident resulting from culmination of a number of safety precaution violations.

1. Irregular Shape of Workpiece – A Big NO!

The workpiece selected is a log of wood. It has an irregular shape which is not flush with the miter saw base (as a matter of fact, it is not flush with anything).

What safety rule did we learn?

Don’t cut materials of irregular shapes with the miter saw.

2. Hand Too Close to the Blade is a Hand Too Close to Injury

Did you notice that the operator was holding the workpiece with his hand that was too close to the miter saw blade and the cutting line. This was a big mistake. We are relieved that it did not cause any hand injury.

What is the second safety rule we have learned?

You must always remember to keep your hand well away from the cutting line and the blade.

One of the biggest hazards with miter saws (as well as other saws in general) is the operator’s hand getting caught by the blade. Hand injuries are one of the most common injuries associated with rotating saws.

3. Workpiece Not Secured – A Guarantee of Trouble!

Continuing with the previous observation, did you notice that the workpiece was not secured to anything. As soon as the miter saw blade made contact with the wood, operator’s hand wasn’t strong enough to keep it in place. This was a big mistake.

So, what is the third safety rule we’ve learned?

Always make sure your workpiece is properly secured before initiating the cut.

4. Miter Saw not Secured to the Table – An Invitation to Accident!

Did you observe that the miter saw was not secured to the table? As soon as the blade got caught in the wood, the whole miter saw jumped. It was a serious mistake.

What’s the fourth safety rule here?

Miter saws must ALWAYS be bolted down to a solid foundation.

5. Not Unplugging the Miter Saw Before Fixing It – A Risky Business!

Did you observe that after the accident, the operator did not unplug the miter saw. He continued checking for what had went wrong without unplugging it.

You can even hear the motor making an abnormal noise as if it is trying to rotate the stuck blade again at 27 second mark in the video (watch the instance below).

(A recap of how the motor tried to rotate the blade again because miter saw was being checked and fixed without unplugging its cable)

Had the motor been successful in breaking the blade free from the wood, who knows how it could’ve gone as the operator was not prepared for it.

What safety rule did we learn here?

NEVER fix, adjust or do any inspection or maintenance with the miter saw unless its cable is unplugged.

Buyer's Guide Questions

Are Mitre saw stands universal?

It depends on the type of saw mounting mechanism the stand is featuring. Most of the miter saw stands come with universal quick release saw mounting brackets that are compatible with majority of brands and models of miter saws in the market. However, it is advisable to always match the dimensions of your miter saw foundation with mounting brackets of miter saw stand to confirm the compatibility.

Who makes the best miter saw stand?

There are a lot of manufacturers in the market making good quality miter saw stands including Dewalt, Bosch, BORA and Toughbuilt but we cannot declare a single winner unless we first decide the type of application and the criteria on which we are finding the ‘best’.

For example, we found Bosch’s T4B gravity rise miter saw as the best all rounder whereas Dewalt DWX723 is the best for heavy duty professional applications. Bora PM4000 is the best miter saw stand for the money while Dewalt DWX725B stands out as the best option if extension arms are not required.

In short, any one manufacturer cannot be given the crown of best manufacturer of miter saw stand unless a criterion of judgment is laid down.

Are miter saw stands worth it?

A stand is inevitably needed for a miter saw for you to be able to efficiency saw wood. The real question is if the portable miter saw stands manufactured by companies like Dewalt, Bosch and Toughbuilt are worth the money. The emphasis here is on ‘portable’ and the answer lies within your requirement of portability.

If you never find the need to transport your miter saw anywhere other than your workshop, you don’t need a portable and collapsible miter saw stand. However, you will find portable miter saw stands extremely handy if you fall among any of the persons described below,

1. You are a contractor working from jobsite to jobsite. It won’t be convenient to setup a saw stand everywhere you go. Portable miter saw stands allow you to fold it up, put it in your truck and open it up wherever required.

2. A DIYer looking to patch everything up after you’ve finished your DIY project under which case you would simply fold your miter saw stand and put it away somewhere.

3. You want the flexibility to change your backyard or professional workshop layout. A portable miter saw stand will allow you to put your miter saw wherever you like.

How do you attach a miter saw to a stand?

There are 2 possibilities, one is universal quick release mounting brackets and the other is fixed railing.

For universal quick release mounting brackets, you simply bolt your miter saw to the brackets in the first step and fix the mounting brackets over your miter saw stand railing in the next step.

For a fixed railing, you will have to put the miter saw over your stand and tighten the fixation bolts to secure it in place.

How high should a miter saw table be?

Miter saw tables should be high enough to put the miter saw handle above your waist to give you a good working posture and line of sight during work. Above 30” is a good working table height (without the saw) and the higher the better.

DEWALT Miter Saw Stand Model DWX725B and Bora Heavy Duty Miter Saw Stand Model PM 4000 have the most ergonomic table heights at 36” in our review.

How long should a miter saw stand be?

A miter saw stand with outriggers extended should be at least 8 ft. long to allow cutting baseboards and long molding pieces or flooring transition strips etc. With 8ft. of extended length, you will be able to cut at least 10 ft. long boards.

From a technical perspective, longer supports tend to sag under the load of the board causing a loss in cutting utility and precision. Therefore, the main challenge for manufacturers is not just increasing the extended length of the miter saw stand but keeping the supports solid and sturdy. The more robust the structure of the miter saw stand, the longer the jobs it can support.

For example, the Bosch T4B Gravity Rise Miter Saw Stand on our list supports lengths up to 18 ft. It is closely followed by Dewalt DWX723 that supports lengths up to 16 ft.
